In the field of Prevention, we are especially concerned about the developing adolescent brain. We want to protect it as much as possible while also encouraging our students to seek positive experiences that create lasting positive infrastructural change.
The introduction and passing of the Cannabis legislation did complicate the discourse on how we would present the information to adolescents and guardians to those adolescents.
To make sense of this substance impacting the development of the adolescent brain, IMPACT NJ (a subgroup of the broader New Jersey Regional Coalition) created a radio advertisement to reach the ears of many all over New Jersey.
Malissa Arnold, The Coalition Coordinator, and I, the Drug-Free Communities Coordinator, were a part of IMPACT NJ. After working months on an appropriate script, ad, reading time, and figuring how we would package it all in a digestible manner, Malissa and I found ourselves being the voices of this underage marijuana usage ad. Malissa would be doing the English version and I the Spanish version.
There were some obstacles in officially getting the ad recorded. We were pleasantly surprised by the overall process of recording (understanding what would go into it, the attention to detail we were introduced to, etc.).
We walked into an unassuming building. It did not seem real when we first stepped inside and discovered a line of offices and then a sophisticated-looking studio where actual DJs and hosts would sit. With very little nuance, it was not hard to imagine how we would be recording. We proceeded with the recording, knowing this would be something that could have the potential for a lasting impact on the audience it was reaching.
You can find the recordings for the English and Spanish versions of the NJ IMPACT Communications Team Marijuana Ad right here:

It was an honor and a privilege to record this ad. Thank you to NJPN for the opportunity - and thank you to our communities for inspiring the work we do. Listen to it on a radio station near you!
