MLK Day of Service 2023
Earlier this week, we celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of community service!
The ASYSST team joined the Upward Bound program at Mercer County Community College's James Kerney campus to work on a number of projects on Monday, January 16. Working alongside many local organizations, community members and leaders, some of our ASYSST program students and Mercer Council staff members came together to serve the Greater Trenton Area.
ASYSST students and staff members worked together to assemble hygiene kits and bagged lunches throughout the morning. These items were prepared to benefit the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.
Other groups of volunteers participated on a project called "Crochet for a Cause" in conjunction with MCCC's fashion design program. Mercer Council's PCMC Coalition Coordinator, Malissa Arnold, was all smiles as she joined in to crochet small wearable items to be donated to HomeFront.
Additional service projects included a coat drive to support the Rescue Mission of Trenton, the assembly of personal care items for Capital Health patients, and a "Green Walk" - where volunteers worked together to clean up the streets from campus to City Hall.
Later in the day, students were able to share lunch together, enjoy drum and step performances, and listen to speakers celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Keynote speaker Rev. Toby Sanders shared on the topic of "First Steps," and students were able to participate in discussion and breakout groups.
At Mercer Council, we envision healthy, safe and responsible communities, and are always excited to partner with the community members that we serve. We are committed to creating pathways to reduce substance related challenges for individuals, families and communities in the Mercer County area. Our staff was honored to have taken part in this year's MLK Day of Service!
