STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM
On October 24th and 25th, I had the pleasure of being trained in the Strengthening Families Program (SPF). It was an intense two day training that was powerful and informative. It is a program that is very easy to follow and one that I am sure is very rewarding for the families and the facilitators when the program is completed.
SFP is a 14- session evidenced based family skills training program. The program is designed to educate parents about the importance of positive parental behavior. What sets this parental program apart from others is that parents and children attend the sessions together. Each session starts out with a half hour family dinner. After the dinner they break off into separate groups for an hour to learn parenting and social skills. The final hour the families reunite and practice the skills they learned in their separate sessions through fun and interactive play.
SFP has proven to:
• Increase positive parenting
• Increase parental involvement
• Decrease parental substance abuse and misuse
• Decrease parental and child depression
• Increase child social skills
• Reduce child aggression
• Reduce family conflict.....and so much more
