Prosecutor Angelo Onofri and Mercer Council staff Dave DeCamp

The Mercer Council and Prevention Coalition of Mercer County were proud to be represented at 5 different National Night Out (NNO) locations throughout Mercer County on August 3rd. National Night Out is an important event that seeks to foster and enhance relationships between neighborhoods/communities and various law enforcement agencies. Staff tabled this event at Hamilton Township, Hopewell Township, Ewing, Robbinsville and East Windsor. We engaged with children, parents, grandparents and other community members about the importance of primary prevention/education in helping people of all ages avoid substances to keep themselves and those around them safe and healthy. Every year, the Prevention Coalition of Mercer County asks Mercer residents to provide feedback by completing community surveys, which provide our agency with valuable information on perceptions surrounding substance use/misuse; this feedback in turn assists the agency and Coalition to more effectively tailor prevention efforts to each community. We also distributed medication disposal bags for individuals to safely dispose of their old, unused and expired medications if they do not have access to a medicine drop box at their local police station. Narcan kits were also distributed to families living with an individual with an Opioid Use Disorder. Staff reported making over 350 contacts (combined) in the five different locations! It was exciting to be "live" this year as last year's event was cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
